This is one of my favorite recipes. It is from "The Wooden Spoon Cookbook" by Miriam Miller.
Molasses Sugar Cookies
3/4 cup shortening (I use butter-the real thing)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
Mix well, then chill. Make into balls; roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 8-10 min. (I bake at a slightly less temperature and for 7 minutes exactly. I like mine a little chewy. If yours get hard, put them in a container with a slice of bread and they will get soft again. I had to do this last time).
