Teaching Kids to do Dishes

I've known for awhile now that I need to have the boys doing more "chores" around the house. They are old enough, and frankly I'm tired of doing everything. (Plus I want my future daughter in laws to love me). I'm also wanting to start some sort of allowance with them and I would like them to earn it.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to let them try washing the dishes. We do have a dishwasher, but I think everyone should know how to wash dishes by hand. We always have things that either won't fit or can't be washed in the dishwasher. There is never a lack of dirty dishes.

The first thing I had the boys do was check the table and the living room for any dishes/cups that may be floating around the house. Then I filled the sink for them. I wanted it to be warm enough to kill some germs, but not too hot that they wouldn't want to stick their hands in the water. I also put a couple of thick washcloths in the rinse water. That way if they dropped a dish, it would have a better chance of surviving.
I put the dish drainer on several towels. I usually keep it in the sink when I do dishes, but thought they would do better with rinse water and then the drainer to put them in.
My pictures are a little backward. This is Tyler toward the end of washing dishes. He put his apron on because he was getting wet. These pictures were taken a couple of weeks ago, before we turned on the air conditioner. It was hot and everyone under the age of 7 ran around in their underwear most of the time.

Tyler was so happy to be helping!

So clean you can see your reflection! ;)
We talked about how to wash the dishes. I stressed that it was very important to not only get the food off, but also to wash where anyone had touched the dishes (ie: lips on the rim of a glass).
It was somewhat of a struggle for me to let them do this. It took time. It made some mess. The only good part was that even if only 50% of them got clean, that was 1/2 that I didn't have to do! Tyler had a much better percentage than that. I think there were only two or three things I rewashed. I did end up not letting Isaiah finish as he was more interested in playing in the water with the bubbles.
I haven't really let them do dishes since then. I really want to encourage them to be independent, but it's so hard to let them do it.

Do your kids do dishes (the old fashioned way)? At what age did they start doing them? Do you give your kids an allowance? How much? Do they have to do anything to earn it?

You'll have days like this...

Today I managed to frustrate all 3 of the boys during school... Ethan did not like the music I was playing.
Isaiah's puzzle was tooooo harrrrrd!

And Tyler didn't like cleaning off his desk after writing on it!
But I was frustrated today too. So I guess we're even.

Sort of Fun for Christmas

Was it only sort of fun, or only sort of for Christmas?
You decide.
A week or so ago, I realized that the boys had several coupons from their birthday that were going to expire. The first was 20 free tokens each from Chuck E. Cheese. You get these for signing up for their birthday club online.

(Bad parenting moment. Not only did I let my boys play with guns *gasp*, I also accidentally chose some freaky mummy/Night of the Living Dead sort of game for them to play. )
Ethan and Tyler playing their first game of air hockey and loving it!

Free pretzel bites at the mall. They give you a huge cup for your birthday (when you sign up online for the birthday club. I believe this is called "Pretzel Time".

At Toys R Us looking for things to spend his $3 birthday gift card on (again from their birthday club, you can sign up in the store). Obviously Lego's were not $3, so he bought some candy and a dot to dot book.

Last stop was Cold Stone for two free kids cups with a mix in. I forgot to take my camera inside. Tyler got cotton candy ice cream with white chocolate chips and Ethan got vanilla with M and M's mixed in.
Isaiah and I were with them, I just chose to share the pics of Ethan and Tyler. At Chuck E. Cheese, we all played games and shared the tokens. We also shared the ice cream and the pretzel bites (although I did try the Pumpkin Spice pretzel with caramel dipping sauce).
A lot of fun was had for FREE! Go now and sign up for those birthday clubs!

Another Day....another tooth!

On Friday, the boys and I went to a church rummage sale. As we were leaving, Tyler tells me that he has a loose tooth. I was a bit skeptical, but felt it anyways. It was really loose! He played with it for the rest of the afternoon, and finally it was just hanging there. I asked him if I could pull it out for him and he said OK. He was so brave! I barely had to move it and it popped right out. Toothless Twins
Happy little brother.
Isaiah told Tim the other night that he "has a loose tooth too, but it just doesn't move yet". Ha ha. He is so desperate to catch up to his big brothers!

Leeland Revisited....or He Visits Again!

Such a happy smiley boy! With cousin Isaiah.

With cousin Tyler.

With big brother Lochlyn.
Not sure why Ethan didn't get in on the photo op. Matthew is off on Wednesday afternoons again and Lochlyn is out of school for the summer, so we have been able to resume some of our Wednesday fun. This time...plus one!

He Ain't Heavy....

This started the other day. Tyler decided that he wanted to carry Isaiah to bed for his nap. At the time, he didn't realize just how far it was to Isaiah's bedroom.
So they ended up like this.

Then Tyler told him, "How about we go to your room and start there?".

Mission accomplished!

Bryce's Culinary Adventures Part One

My cousin, Bryce, cooking some pigeon meat that he brought to the campout. He shot it himself.

Tyler eating his first taste of pigeon.
He liked it and went back for more!
