To catch fruit flies/gnats, put about 1/4 -1/2 inch cider vinegar in a small glass cup and add 1-2 drops dish washing liquid (I usually use a fruit flavored scent like orange or green apple). I leave mine on my windowsill and it works very well. There are 10 in here that I need to clean out! I actually get excited about catching those little bugs.

i don;t think I have gnats or flies at least I don;t see themin here
thanks for the tip
it works! i've been doing it for awhile now too. we usually don't have a lot of gnats but this year we've had a bumper crop of them.
Good tip. I don't have that problem now but I will remember for the future.
I had to do this yesterday. But we designed a paper funnel into a glass and poured the vinegar in, no dishsoap. The flies fly down the funnel and can't get back through the hole. We've got about 100 dead flies now. Starting a collection I think!
We had TONS of fruit flies earlier this summer and just ended up keeping all of our fruit in the fridge (bananas included - yuck) -- it still took a lot of one-by-one killing and a lot of time to get rid of them. Thank you for this tip -- I will have to try it next time!!
I'll have to try this those little fruit flies drive me nuts!

Cool. I'll have to try that!
Those bugs drive me nuts and always seem to come in on bananas?! Thanks for a great and very useful tip!
Where do these things come from anyway??? I have always wondered that!
they come from the skin of different fruit, especially bananas. you should always wash all types of fruit as soon as you get it home to help kill the bugs.
This year we didn't have any fruitflies... don't ask me why.
Maybe the bad weather.
But I'll keep this tip in mind.
Thanks a lot!
I'll need to try this. With the monsoons we suddenly got a ton of them in the house (darn screens can't keep them out) they are driving me crazy. This will be much better then the pesticide I've been putting on my poor plants and flowers.
Thanks for sharing.
