Books

As I have mentioned before, I love books. I keep track of all the books I read in a journal that my wonderful sister in law, Charity, gave me. Last year I read 23 books! It always amazes me how many I get read because it never seems like I have that much time to do it. There are always some really good books that I finish in a day or two because I can't put them down. There are others that I started awhile ago and just finished.

I read a little bit of a variety, but mostly stick to Amish fiction, some romance (no trash), and books about homemaking/parenting/marriage, etc. Some of the neat books I read last year were:

My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult- This book raises ethical questions. The family has a second child to be a donor for their first and only other child. The first daughter has medical problems and can only be donated to by a sibling.

Breathe by Keri Wyatt Kent- I can't remember everything about this book, only that it was really good and I want to own it. It had to do with finding time for God in the busyness of life.

Miracles Happen by Brooke and Jean Ellison- This was a true story about a girl who was hit by a car and how her whole family (especially her mother) stood right by her throughout her life. Her mother even attended Harvard (I think) with her and took notes for her and was her roommate. She made sure she could attend regular school. Brooke was paralyzed from the neck down.

A child called "It" by Dave Pelzer- This is also a true story. It is by a man who was horribly abused by his mother growing up. Doesn't sound like a great story, but the fact that he triumphed over the abuse is inspiring.

Bringing Up Boys by James Dobson- Although it didn't go into some areas such as discipline as much as I would have liked, there is a lot of good stuff in here. If you want to know what the world is doing to get in at the heart and mind of your son, read this. Even if you are not a Christian, I do not think that it is overly preachy and it has some very interesting studies in it.

Another neat thing I wanted to mention was http://www.bookmooch.com/ . This is a neat site where you can post books that you want to get rid of. People request them from you and you pay to send it to them. You can also request books from other people and they pay to send them to you. I have both sent and received a book, so I know it works.

I also have a really good book recommendation. There's a book called "Creative Corrections" by Lisa Whelchel. She played Blair in The Facts of Life t.v. show. She's a Christian mom who homeschools her kids. Her website is www.lisawhelchel.com Her book is AWESOME! I read the whole thing in one day. It's a whole book about how to creatively discipline your children. I have used so many of her suggestions......it's great. I suggest you read it.

I got Creative Correction for Christmas! I have only started it. It's one of those things I'd love to stick under my pillow and just absorb while I'm sleeping!

Hey Lisa Whelchel came to my church a few months ago!! I didn't go see her, we were busy doing something else, but I thought it was so cool that she was there!!
I read the Child called It book a while ago, it really is a very good book. I've since seen him on Oprah and his story is so compelling!!
