New Bread Recipe

Today I tried a new recipe for "Pillowy Soft Whole Wheat Bread". It turned out very well and is yummy. I like it because most of the hard work (aka kneading) is done in the bread machine. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I like kneading bread. It's very theraputic. Some days though, it's nice to let the bread machine do the work. This is the first whole wheat recipe that I have gotten to work for me. I have a feeling it's because of the wheat gluten, which I had never used before, but had bought for this purpose. Although you use the dough cycle on the bread machine, you do bake it in the oven. Lest you think my bread turned out perfectly, I thought I'd share the "keepin it real" picture. This is the one that shows the chunk that got stuck in the pan when I took it out.

Lura,

I'm enjoying your blog! Thanks for the link to your gorgeous loaf of bread. :-)

I'll have to try the recipe again, exactly how Cindy wrote it. You two are making my sad little loaf look bad! :-)

There is some left. Unfortunately we had a bug going around our house this weekend, so no one was eating much.

yummy yummy. i stink so bad at making bread. I will have to try again in this decade. I have enough yeast for it, that it for sure!!

Is it cheaper to make it Lura? I knwo it taste better but is it cheaper than 1.50 a loaf (that is what i pay for whole wheat)

I think it would be considerably cheaper. I can't give you an exact cost, but I spent 3.99 for 10 pounds of flour. maybe 2.99 for the gluten and everything else I have on hand. I could make quite a few loaves with that.

We get a 50 pound bag of Prairie Gold wheat from an Amish bulk foods store for $29 It was $17 a year ago! :( I don't remember how many cups that is but it takes me only 2 cups of wheat to make a loaf of bread. We have a Nutrimill which I highly recommend!
