We're mad about cow!

Recently we bought 1/2 a cow from a family at church. We have wanted to do this for quite awhile. We had no idea what 1/2 a cow would look like. It is a lot of meat! I had these two baskets up front and then the bags in the back of the van.
This is what it looks like all put away in the freezer.
Our first meal of steak. Mmmm.

For those that may be curious, it averaged out to about $1.80 a pound (and that's not even including the liver that they threw in for free-just for you mom!). I figure that is a really good price for beef considering ground beef is often $1.99 and steaks are $5.99 and up. I've read that half a cow should feed a family of 5 for 6 months, however we do not eat beef that often (and still won't). We were lucky to eat it once a week as expensive as it is.

I was really surprised at how large a pound of beef is. I always buy the smallest package and then use it like it's a pound.

I guess there will be no more complaining that there is "nothing" to eat!

If you are planning to keep it for a while you might want to wrap each package in freezer paper or foil (label the outside) the regular package won't hold out freezer burn very long. I realize this is a pain but it in well worth it in the months to come. We get meat from my in-laws for Christmas, and it really makes a difference.

I agree about the freezer paper, it would suck to have all you meat ruin to freezer burn! Gosh, that meal made my mouth water!! A half a cow is alot of meat indeed!! We need to look into doing that too.

Good for you! I have always wanted to do this but haven't had the funds to do it yet.

I'm pretty sure it's all double wrapped in plastic. I figure they know what they are doing. I freeze my stuff from the store all the time and I never have any problem with it getting freezer burned. Either that or I don't care that much about the taste. Ha ha. I do keep it in the big freezer which is not frost free. I would have more problems w/ freezer burn in the freezer above the fridge.
